Ford 8N Starting Problem

I have a 1950 model Ford 8N. I can'nt seem to get it to start unless I short out the Ballasic Resistor. It will crank but not fire unless the Ballasixc is shorted out. I replaced the Resistor but that did not help. It was rewired from a 6 volt to a 12 volt. Also now the battery keeps going dead. The battery checked out ok at the local Autozone but it seems to arc at the hot post while I crank the tractor. Any help would be appreciated.

Since you have trouble starting that sounds related to coil voltage and since you also have trouble keeping the battery charged although it checked good it sounds like there is something fundamentally wrong with your twelve volt conversion that is causing both troubles.

What style alternator? Delco S10 one wire? Something else?

What type coil? Six volt? Twelve volt? Either way the reistor has to be matched to the coil.

Has this twelve volt conversion ever worked right? Did these two troubles come on at the same time after the conversion worked for a while?

The more information you give the better answers you are going to get. IF it is a stock system dozens of folks here can help. Depending on how it was converted to twelve volt you may need a mechanic, a tv repair man, or maybe an excorsiost.

Your mileage may vary

It sounds like insufficient voltage to the coil is the issue. You mentioned it has been converted to 12 volt. Did it run fine after the conversion and just recently started this? I'm assuming your jumping around the ballast resistor to increase the voltage. Is the coil a standard 6volt type or is it a 12 volt type? If it's 6 volt, there should be another resistor in-line to the coil in addition to the old original.
If everything is correct regarding the conversion set-up and all connections are clean, bright and tight, the most likely culprits are the coil or condensor. I've had all kinds of fits with crappy condensors that cut out off and on making diagnosis difficult.

Sonny..... ..thats a 12 to 6 volt converting resistor. And if'n yer havin' to short it out to start that means its open (BAD) or a very WRONG value. It is unclear if your tractor continues to run if you remove the short, if it STOPS when you remove the short, it is DEFINATELY BAD.

If your battery clamp is clean, bright, and tight and it still arc's, replace the battery cable 'cuz its corroded inside the clamp and there is NO CURE.

Since you think your battery is good and it continues to go bad, its because your 12 volt alternator is probably bad. Take it into an autoparts store for a "free" checkout..... ...Dell

Thanks for all your help guys. The tractor ran good for a while but started acting up. When I remove the short from the resitor the tractor stops running. I bought the tractor after it was converted to a 12 volt and the guy left a couple of loose wires not connected. I tryed to figure out were the wires went and this is when my problems started. I always have to jump start the tractor now to get it to turn over as well as short out the resistor to get it to run.

Sonny..... ...I told you if your tractor STOPS running when you remove the jumper around the 12 to 6 volt converting resistor THE RESISTOR IS BAD, BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!! !

and most likely your 6 volt coil is cooked too.

BE SMART, replace the old 6 volt coil with a real 12 volt coil NAPA IC14SB that uses NO RESISTOR. understand?

Connect the coil (-) to the distributor points and the coil (+) to the ignition switch..... ....respectfully, Dell

Below is a link to one twelve volt wiring diagram.
This may or may not work depending on what type alternator [or if you have an alternator and not a generator} you have and what voltage coil you have and whether it even needs a resistor.

If'n it were my machine [or if you dragged it in here] I would:

a)get me a whole wiring harness [fifteen bucks or so]
b) get the alternator checked and replace if necessary
c) get a known voltage coil and if it required one a resistor to match it

Doing it right will be cheaper in the long run--or you could run an ad and pass on the troubles to a new buyer

Your mileage may vary
