Oil pickup tube loose?

My 50 8n has had low oil pressure (10) when hot low idle, 25 cold idle, and when changing the oil this morning I thought I might checked the oil pickup tube for looseness. With a small amount of pressure it will (pop) move up vertically about 3/32" and sideways about 1/32". Is this normal or should I investigate further and what is the best procedure for dropping the oil pan to gain access. Thanks for any help.

The pickup tube should not have any loose motion at all. It can move slightly from the bending of the tube when pressure is applied but no looseness at all should be present. If it is loose it needs attention now.

To remove the pan the hood and the front axle assembly will have to come off.

Your oil pressure readings are quite normal for Ns. The pickup tube has nothing to do with oil pressure, unless it is sooo loose that oil isn't being picked up and you have 0 oil pressure. Steve 8N 169302

Steve;
If the pickup tube is loose and the pump is sucking air I am sure this would reduce the amount of oil available to the pump and significantly reduce the oil pressure?
These pumps are not designed to pump air and even a little air getting into the pump would have a considerable effect on how much oil or pessure was produced.

Jim,

You're absolutely right! I know this from painful experience. Suffice to say that I rebuilt the engine in my 8N thinking that the low oil pressure was a result of bad bearings. Nope, a loose pump pickup was the cause. The oil pump is not submerged in the oil pan like most automotive engines. If the oil pump pickup comes loose, the pump will suck air. If it comes out - very bad things can happen.

Pull the pan, disassemble the oil pump and have the pickup brazed back on. Make certain that it won't move after it's brazed. (I had to have mine brazed twice. The welder did a poor job the first time!)
