1948 8n just recived from the country. They had it in the yard and showed it no love. I brought it home and cleaned it up a touch. It has been sitting for well over a year. They say it runs well but has to be jumped. To begin I put in a new battery , cleaned cables and replaced fuel and separator bowl. Key on, hit starter switch and turns over slowly. Then I remembered it was 6vt. Positive ground. Put cables in correct order. Turns over slow and no go. Put on a jumper charger. Turns over stronger but still will not catch. Reminds me of when the car just gets no fire. Ordered tune up kit. Wires, plugs, dist cap, points, solenoid ... any suggestions before I start takeing things apart thanks for any ideas

One big thing to check is the ground strap to the frame.. mine was painted under , and it would barely start as well.. pull it off and polish it up.

After you get that battery charged up, spark from the batt terminal on the regulator to the ARM terminal.. that will repolarize your genny... you'll need to do that.. especially if you hooked it up backwards once already.

My second 8N sat for three or four years outside, without a carb on it. I put points, condenser, rotor and cap on along with new plug wires. Had to fix the old boy's goofup in the distributor, as he used some heavy wire to hook up the points to the post on the distributor. New battery, a carb I had here, and she fired off. Just be sure ALL electrical connections are bright and shiny. VERY IMPORTANT. Did you put any oil in the cylinders first?? It should take off as long as you have the nessessary ingrediants. Fuel, Air, Spark, and compresion. Good luck!!! Oh yeah, the slower cranking is a normal thing compared to a 12 volt newer model. Still no reason to convert to 12 volts in my opinion. Keep em tuned and they'll start and run.

thank you for the helpful comments. New parts are here and being installed. Found lots of old wires patched together back during the Truman Administration. Replaceing those as I find them. Looking forward to hearing it start soon.
