Bought me one of those super cheap China-made compression testers ($9.95) to check the compression on my 85 Ford Ranger 4X4 (2.8 v6) only to discover that the shank isn't long enought to reach the plug recess. Trying to find a suitable adapter and looks like I may have to bite the bullet and go get the expensive China-made tester at Auto-zone ($24.99) unless someone here has an idea that might work. I tried taking the guts out of an old spark plug in order to clamp on an old hose, but the ceramic inside ruined a punch and two drifts. Story of my life. I'll end up spending $100 to save $15. Ron

What about a spark plug non-fouling adapter.

Have you ever been into a napa or car quest and seen a sparjk plug non fouling adapter? essentially it threads into the spark plug hole in the head or block, then the spark plug threads into it... it just gives the spark plug a little distance back from the combustion chamber..

might be the difference in length you need... just find a suitable adapter to attatch into the top threaded hole.. perhaps with a tube/threaded nipple, etc.. and then attatch that to your test kit.

I never noticed one, but as you discribe it, it sounds like it would work very nicely. I'll call a few places tomarrow and see if I can find one. Thanks much....Ron

RoN,

I had the same problem on my motorcycle. Get an old plug and heat it up good with a torch. Then drop it in a bucket of water. That will shatter the insulator so you can get the pieces out. Then weld on a small tube and finally one of those air coupler halves. Now you can spin the adapter in and then just click the coupler on.

Chineese puller, american ingenuity.

Both ideas I received including yours sound good. I'll try them both and you know how it works. Thanks..... .Ron
