New? Brake problem

I just finished rebuilding the rear axle and associated parts. Now with the brakes adjusted, when I apply the right brake, especially in reverse, the brake shoes contact the drum and move with it. The actuating arm also moves up- ward, in reverse, and is coming in contact with the shield, probably why the old one has a tear in it. 1. Do I need a new brake plate (8N2212b)? The old one is bent and miss shapen. Could this be why the shoes move?
2. Any one else have this problem before?
Thanks in advance.

Did you use new springs and install them correctly? Did you check the ears on the brake rods where they contact the brake shoe cam faces?
If you can't take a hammer and flatten and straighten the brake plate, then buy another.

Bg, thanks for the info. No I didn't use new springs, but I believe they are on correctly, and they are not very used. Shorter one to the adjuster and big one as the return side. The brake rod has been bent, but they seem to match up as the other side does.
