I went out to mow today and the tractor wouldn't do anything. It has been sitting for a week and a half. I pressed the starter button and nothing happened. i then cleaned both battery cables and terminals. Is the starter switch busted or what? thanks for any help.

Assuming negative ground and all connections clean, brite and tight. Get your jumper cable. Take that thing out of gear. Connect one end to the starter post. Check to see that you took it out of gear. Touch the other end of the cable to the negative post of the battery. If it runs the starter like it's gonna start then you have a switch problem or starter relay. Jump the ignnition switch and see if it works better. If it doesn't then you will need that relay and if it does get a switch. If it doesn't run the starter then brush the jumper cable against some rusty metal. If you get a big, scary spark the battery is ok and the starter is crap. If you think the battery is bad charge it or jump from another battery to see that everything else is working. Jump a 12v from the starter post to the 12v battery, not battery post to battery post. Connect the starter post first so you don't spark up the threads on there.
If you find something you think is bad then clean all the connections on it and try it again before you replace it or fix it.

""Assuming negative ground and all connections ""

I think you meant 'assume positive ground'.

Otherwise.. ya.. what you said.

Ok, you have already cleaned the battery posts. Try checking the connections again at the solenod and starter, and while in neutral hit the switch... any clicking?

If you have an 8n with the stock starter button, you can simply ground that small wire coming off the starter switch.. be careful... this bypasses the neutral cutout... that will trigger the solenoid.. if it doesn't.. check that your battery is charged ( did you leave the lights on a week ago? )

Anyway.. if the battery is charged, and grounding the wire doesn't do it, try jumping around the big starter solenoid... if noting there, my guess is something is open or stuck in the starter.. sometimes if it is stuck, or just starting to go, a small whack with a hammer while holding the start switch will free it up.. ( a small whack.. don't cave the side of the starter in.. )

As a remote possibility, the starter drive may be engaged and stuck in the flywheel... If it is, usually vigorously rocking the tractor back and forth by grasping the rear tire, in 4th gear will free it.

let us know what you find out... ( be sure to check the battery voltage.. and also check the voltage while depressing the start switch.. might just be a weak charge on the battery that drops to nothing under a load )

Hi Andrew,

The first thing I would check is the battery. (If a battery is on its last leg, a change in the weather like a heat wave or a cold wave will finish it off). Next, I would check the connections, solenoid and starter switch. HTH. Rick H. Ga.
