I am just getting around to changing the oil on the 8N (1950) I purchased about a month ago. There seems to be about 1-1/2" of oil in the bottom of the filter can... I'm removing an old style filter, so I thought that I better make sure there was no extra gaskets/parts in the bottom... it seemed to be full of sludge (yuk). I removed and cleaned it out. There was a rubber gasket on top of a 4 legged spacer thingy (not in F0-4 manual), I left the gasket in because it seemed to keep the thingy secure... The new filter appears to fit okay either way.

Is it normal to keep that gasket in there?

Second, in adding the oil... there seems to be a baffle of sorts halfway down the filler tube, at the bend... it holds a bit of oil there... is it best to leave it so it catches crud, or punch a small hole and let the extra oil drip through?

Thanks a million, as always.

Regards,
Robert (TX)

Hello Robert-
NO!!! DO NOT punch a hole in the filler tube!!! It has two baffles in it but the oil will drain down into the crancase. You can take the tube off and clean it good as it may be plugged with years of crud. Use mineral spirits to soak it in as well as the breather cap. Blow dry with compressed air. The filter comes with a gasket new. FRAM p/n C3P works good and New Holland still sells them as well as sponsors of this board. However the inside parts are hard to get so don't lose any.

PloughNman...
Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you... I didn't mean I would punch a hole in the filler tube, but I had thought about punching a hole in the baffle... if it is just crudded up, I'll clean it as you suggested.

:^)

Greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Robert

I use Fram filters and a new gasket is included with the filter. Manual says to replace gasket.
So I don't know if others give you the gasket with it.

I don't think it needs a hole punched in it.
