Zane and others have mentioned using a Ferguson TO20 rear main seal part to fix leaking 8N without removing the crank. My rear main is leaking and I plan to try this method but I have not been able to locate the part # or a place to purchase the part. Any suggestions? Also, it has been said that packing the TO20 rope is difficult so any info. is appreciated.

Thanks for the info. I understand the part is not interchangable, but in the archives it is suggested that the best fix is to stuff the rope seal from Ferguson TO20 seal kit to compact the 8N seal that is already there. The way I understand it, the cotton roping compacts the original seal and tightens everything up so that oil will not leak. Zane claims to have successfully completed the task several times. If I am way off base please tell me!

Now I understand. You want to fix the rear main leaking seal with the rope potion of a TO 20 rear main kit. I thought you wanted only the seal for the crank. The rope Zane speaks of is used on the Fergie to seal between the rear main and the block. The oil seal then bolts to the block and rear main cap. The rope seal itself if I remember correctly is nothing more than about 8 or so strands of cotton string like a butcher shop might use. Might be a little more fluffy. Nothing too special about it. If Zane says it will work , it will. I have used a main spring from a windup clock. Spring from the starter rewind on a Briggs and Stratten might be about the correct size too. Sharpened one end and slid it behind the rope seal to push it closer to the crank. I think it was on my 9N but not sure. Happened a long time ago. Good luck.

The Fergie with a Continental Z120 engine uses a Victor part# 49910 rear main seal . This seal in inches measures 3.375 on the shaft, 4.381 O.D. of seal and width is 1/2 inch. This is a rubber seal with a single lip enclosed in a metal housing. On a Fergie you must separate the engine from the transmission to replace. If you get this to work please post how you did it.

Rock..... ....seems to me you answered your own question about the difficulty of installing the MF rear engine oil seal (packing).

The OBVIOUS source for the Fergie TO-20 parts would be the Massy-Ferguson Dealer or what ever they're calling themselves nowadays. Even our N-Board sponsor Yesterdays Tractors sells tractor parts, check their listing.

Realize that the Ford N-Engine is a flathead of Ford design and that the Ferguson TO-20 engine is an OHV engine of Standard Mtrs Pty Ltd design. I researched my bootleg copy of Ferguson vs Ford interchangeable parts and while there is considerable chassis interchangeability, there is NO listed interchangeable engine parts. WONDER WHY???

Failing all that, consider the fact that the Ferguson TO-20 used the SAME ENGINE as the 1950's Triumph TR-3A sportscar, you might be able to find your seal stuffing at old english sportscars specialists like Moss Motors in Californa. (do a web search)..... ...respectfully, Dell

Just to clarify, the TO20 used the Continental engine (Z120) and the TE20 used the Standard engine.
