What is the best way to test my 1940 9N Gen while still hooked up, can I just use a meter tester on the single wire coming out? Also where can I find a rebuild kit for a three brush gen, I can find a two brush but not a three. And how can I tell before taking it apart if mine is a two or three brush?????

Thanks

If you have a volt meter you can put the negative probe on the wire from the generator at the front terminal of the cutout that is mounted on top of the generator. If you have a reading there or about 7 volts then the generator is probably good. then probe the other terminal on the back side of the cut out. If there is no voltage at this point the cutout is bad

Robert,
If you want to confirm the "no charge" condition showing on your ampmeter use your multi-tester to check the battery voltage while the tractor is off, then start the tractor, if the reading remains the same, no charge, if the reading increases, then it's charging. The rate of charge may not be enough to recharge the battery so to increase the charge rate you can adjust the third brush to bring the rate into specs. Good luck. Mike

Not often I disagree with Dell but today is the day. Your ammeter will tell you if everything is working right but if it shows no charge could be the ammeter, the battery, the cut out, the generator or associated wiring.

Sure test for generator is to take loose the wiring and the fan belt and put battery voltage on it. If it motors it will generate. This is the I T F04 manual way and if you have one it will also tell you what else this test shows. If you don't have one today might be a good day for that too.

Your mileage may vary

BJ..... ....yer right..... while "How to tell if your genny is genning while on the tractor without removeing it? LOOK AT YOUR AMMETER. If it ain't charging and you can't adjust it with your 3rd brush, you've got genny problems"

You say..... "Your ammeter will tell you if everything is working right but if it shows no charge could be the ammeter, the battery, the cut out, the generator or associated wiring"..... .I thought "you've got genny problems" covered all your specifics..... ....respectfully, Dell

Robert..... ...How to tell if your 9N's 1-wire genny is a 3-brush genny before taking it apart? BIG CLUE.....there's a 3rd brush screwdriver adjustment on the back plate. 2nd CLUE, it only has 1-wire.

Ok Thanks, I got it that I have a 3 brush, the tractor has no ammeter so I have to use a mutitester. While running if I put one end of the tester on the genny post and the other to ground, should it show voltage??? and being a pos ground does the neg go to the post ????? and where do I find parts for a 3 brush genny???

Thanks again

If it is still a positive grnd system, ... then the positive lead of your voltmeter goes to ground, and the negative lead goes to the charging stud on the genny... and ues.. if working, it should show voltage higher than battery voltage... like the others suggested, check the genny cutout.
