Heavy-duty v Med duty

Hwy dept needs a heavy-duty bush hog that will go 40hrs/wk the entire season without needing seals replaced and blades sharpened and will not otherwise break-down on the side of the highway.
Many of us need a bush hog that will go a couple hours a week or 1/20th of what the heavy duty is designed to do. Many of us would be ok replacing seals and sharpen blades every 5, 10, or 15 years so it's no big deal if we chose to run a medium duty mower. The highway dept wouldn't make it through one season with the medium-duty mower but we can make it years. Of course the med-duty cost less but what may be more important for the N tractor, the medium-duty is likely to weigh less and take less power to operate. That means less wear and tear on the tractor. That's good because a 5' bush hog is a load on the N. On top of that the parts for a medium-duty mower should be more affordable then those same parts required of a heavy-duty mower.
One more thing, crushing rocks and grinding stumps will shorten the life of any mower and unduly stress your N regardless of whether the mower is heavy-duty or medium duty. The heavy-duty just takes more abuse before it fails. Rock crushers and stump grinders are completely different attachments.
And that's my thinking as to why a guy should seriously consider a medium-duty 5' mower rather then the heavy-duty for his N. Having said that, I have ended up with a heavy-duty 5' mower on a 2N. A 60" Mono that ain't afraid of nutin! I mow grass with it though, that's it. I just got an 8N and that is a couple more horsepower so that should help. Were I to buy a new mower I would look long and hard at a good medium-duty mower comparing the weight and power requirements to other mowers. I think it would pay off in the end if for no other reason then because the tractor wouldn't have to work so hard but also because I would expect better performance mowing grass.

Weight was one of the main factors when I chose my brushhog.. and like you point out.. less weight means less metal, means lighter duty.

Even a light/med duty hog is quite a bit of weight. And their gearbox is rated for 40 hp... since our N's are high 20's ( good day ratings! )
we don't need that 85hp gearbox on a bushhog squealer series mower..

I thought about a 6' hog.. but wanted one that all my machines could tote... no need to have two hogs laying around... ( unless I get a fantastik deal on it! ).
