Does it make any difference if the thermostat in my 51 8n, which is in the upper radiator hose, is in close to the radiator or should it be close to the engine.

I think most of us always thought that a thermostat was there only so we could be warm and comfy in the winter. But if that were the case, why have one on a tractor at all? The engineers at Ford thought they were in important to install them in all N's at the factory and Henry was cheap enough that if they weren't needed, he wouldn't have installed them. My suggestion is to get one installed. Just might be the best $15 you will ever spend. Just my opinion..Ron

Pete..... ...as a general rule, use of the N-Thermostat is recommended for smoother running engine in both cold and HOT weather. Additionally, the N-Cooling system is OVERSIZED and needs its tempature regulated to PREVENT sludge and acids from building up inside your engine oilpan contributing to a shorter engine lifespan. Not Good..... ....respectfully, Dell

Pat..... ..you generally install your hose mounted thermostat in engine end of hose and some use a extra radiator clamp to hold it in place. I didn't and mine hasn't moved up the hose. Just make certain you install it aimed correctly. Mine had a very vague flow arrow, others don't. Install the new thermostat with pointie end toward radiator. New thermostat does not look like pictures in I&T FO-4 manual..... ..Dell
