I went out start my tractor and nothing happened. I cleaned the cables and terminals. then I tested them with a meter and I get power at the cable if the starter isn't atached. when its atached it doesn't have any power. the starter insn't stuck. is the starter just shot?

I had the same problem the day after running my '52 8N a month ago. I was able to hear a click near the starter when I pushed the start button. I removed the bolt and wires from the solenoid, cleaned them, replaced them tightly and she turned right over. This forum likes the term "keep all connections bright and tight" which will solve a lot of problems.

There sometimes can be a dead spot where the starter button won't do anything. If so, it's time to repair or replace the starter. Take a close look at the solenoid too. wc

Andrew I don't know why hooking up your starter would kill the power unless the battery is way low. Charge it or jump from a good one. If you jump then take the tractor out of gear, hook one cable to the starter post and the other end to the negative post on the other battery, connect the other cable to the postive post of the other battery, check to make sure the tractor is out of gear, get up in the seat and put the end of the jumper on a tractor ground. Your starter should turn over the engine and if the tractor isn't out of gear it will try to run over you if you aren't in the seat.

I charged the battery over night. when i hooked it up i still got no power at the starter while pushing the button. i unhooked the cable from the starter and tried it agian, this time i got power. why wouldn't the starter get power but the same cable by itself gets power?

That is really odd. You just try jumping around that cable with your jumper cable. From the tractor battery to the starter. If it works that way you have a problem with the tractor wiring or the starter switch or the battery. A no good battery won't take a charge.
