Sometimes, at least for me, I would ask a question and the askee would take the question personal. And I don't generally ask questions anymore because I have been labeled as "hostile".

I really took this label personally. Even thought about check'n in with the white coats. Then, one day, by accident I learned that professional speakers labeled audiences as hostile. Well, the term "hostile" referrs, in the speaking business to audiences that could ask questions. So the speakers use aids to try to figger out what questions the audience might ask so the speaker can learn up quick before his presentation.

Sir, please do not take my question in a manner of hostility, but, here goes.....

Why do you want to change the coil? SORRY!

Rick, you don't need to remove the hood, the generator or the belt, simply flip the wire bale off the top, take 5/16 (I think) wrench, and remove the wire from the top, lift the coil up and out. Replace the new one the same way. Make sure the little pigtail spring on the bottom makes good contact when you replace it, and check your gasket.
Good luck, Ron (who does this in the middle of my driveway, in the middle of a snow storm)

Rick I forgot to address the cost, you can buy one online for $24.00 for a 6 volt, and $27.50 for a 12 volt. Drop me an e-mail if you need an address to order one or for any parts.

Hey Rick, Just replaced coil on my 49 8n. While I was at it I also put in new points, rotor and condenser. The coil can be replaced on a front mount without removing the hood. The wire bail holding the coil to the distributor can be swung from the top towards the radiator and lifted upwards. There is a wire on top that has to be unhooked first. I removed the whole distributor with coil attached and found that its a whole lot easier to just remove the generator to give more room to work but I have a fellow by the name of Arthur visiting me and need more room. Good Luck, Bee.

You should be able to replace the coil easily enough without removing the hood. Just take the belt off the generator and pull it to the side as far as it will go. Remove the wire from the top of the coil and pull the bail forward. The coil will lift right off. Replacing is just reversal of the above. If your 'n' has been converted to 12v, then in my opinion, I would get a 12v coil. Cost about $30-35. Just my opinion....Ron

You don't have to take the hood off.
