8N Timing

I overhauled the engine in my 8N. Today was supposed to be the big day to hear it run. Nope. Here's the problem. I can't time the distributor. (It's a sidemount) I've rebuilt many, many engines, but i've never run into this. In short, with the timing mark on the flywheel at 4 degrees BTC, and I set the points to open at just that location. Tighten the distributor down. Put the rotor on, but it doesn't line up with #1 plug wire. It's PAST the wire. If I turn the distributor to line up the rotor with #1 plug wire then the points are off. It sounds like the distributor is off a tooth, but if I move it one tooth over, I just end up with the same problem but in a different location.

The cam seems to be timed right (I didn't change the cam or crank gears, so I used the timing marks on the gears.) When the flywheel timing mark is on zero, #1 piston is at top dead center and both the intake and exhaust valves are closed.

So, I think the cam is timed correctly, but the distributor is driving me nuts!

Any suggestions? Other than a can of gas and a match? (I'm just about to that point!)

Make sure you put some lube on the end of the distributor shaft were it fits into the timing cover. the cover is the lower bushing for the distributor.

Sounds like your cam and crank are timed right. If you wan't to go a step further try this. When number one is at TDC and both valves are closed look at Number 4 cyl. and both valves on # four should be closed also. I think Dell has nailed your problem.

Al, That is a strange problem... The Rotor & the Cam have a fixed relationship to each other.... I can only guess what maybe the problem but something is not right

a) the Rotor is not correctly indexed to the Shaft (offset)

b) The points or the mounting Plate are offset to the dist body. (when you rotate the Dist body both the location of #1 and the points rubbing block move together)

AL..... ....when static timing the sidemount 8N, since the rotor goes CCW, you'll want to turn the distributor body CW to just open your ignition points at 4 BTDC. Your description of where the points open and where the rotor points to almost sounds like thats the 30 deg of DWELL which will show up if you turn the distributor body CCW to open the points..... ..Dell

My side mount had what looked like two timing marks on the gear. One was slightly larger than the other, and I don't recall exactly, but I don't think they were 180º opposed I had to look very carefully when aligning them. You might also try running the engine through a 180º cycle and see if that helps, since there are two sets of flywheel marks. It's a little tricky trying to get the distributor to seat in the right gear tooth because it turns as you insert it in the hole and the gears mesh.
