The original ammeter in my 51 8n is shot. I bought a new one but it needs to be wired up. Where do I run the wiring from to each post on the new ammeter. No wiring on the old type meter of course.
Thanks guys.

I believe he has the original inductive ammeter. Inductive ammeters use a magnetic pickup to measure current flow. The inductive ammeter works upon the principle that a magnetic field will be produced around a conductor through which current is flowing. So his wire is looped around the ammeter.

I don't know why everybody thinks you need to cut the large yellow wire! If you have to reverse the connections because the ammeter reads backwards you may not have enough on the shortened jumper to make the connection.

A better way is to just attach the large yellow wire to one of the posts on the ammeter and make a jumper for the other side with appropriate connectors. This way you have more wire to work with when you hook it back up.

That's a good point. But I'm pretty sure that unless you cross that wire your ammeter will read correctly. In other words the yellow wire from the solenoid connects to the ammeter post closest to the stearing coluum. Not likely someone would connect that wire from a wiring harness to the ammeter post on the outside and then come off the terminal board and CROSS that wire and go to the wrong ammeter post. If they did, everything would be long enough to put on the closer, correct post.
I wrote up an email this am. Explains how to wire in an ammeter when the meter hasn't been in the circuit and other changes might have been made. This should put everything back to proper sorts.
The wire for the ammeter comes off the solenoid post that has the battery cable. Mine was big and yellow. The big, yellow wire runs up to the dash and through the old loop ammeter and on to the terminal block. New post-type meters require that one cut that wire and crimp connectors for the ammeter posts.
Now our wire ends up connected to the ammeter and going on to the terminal block post that has the wire from the batt term on the regulator AND a wire from the ignition switch. The other side of the terminal block has a wire to the other side of the ignition switch and a wire to the coil. Close the ignition switch and the battery is connected to the coil through the ammeter. Cool huh?

Pat..... ..cut your heavy yellow ammeter wire to conviently connect to the 2-terminals of your NEW ammeter. If meter doesn't read charge when engine is running, swap the meter leads when engine is off. Won't hurt your meter to be connected backward 'cuz "0" is center. Traditionally, you want your ammeter to indicate (+) when charging your battery, wheather positive or negative ground, wheather 6 or 12 volts, all the same (+) for charging battery..... ..... Dell

Hi, Dell, top of the pm TO YA.

dELL,

Years ago when I was spending some time at Columbia University, NYC, I pretty well finished what I was doing there. My expertise of formal ed. stopped with the period of the QUUEN's Knight Force. I was asked to give an brief chapter concerning their armaments.

During that period of Old ENGLIsh periods, this group of protectors were known as ROADKNIGHTS.

Last evening, 'bout this time, a "road-walker" stopped by my shop, here. He asked for some water. GEE we had a lot of fun, but just for a "brief" introduction.

Years ago, when I was a young child, here, along this EASTIE-WESTIE road, I got a great introduction to another style of education. These men (at least, then, we never saw any women walk'n the roads) were known as HOBO's, I stand corfrected, the HOBO road the trains. Come to think of it I Personally NEVER HERD any other term, except ROADKNIGHT.

Got to git to my pump, know. Maybe HE, the KNIGHT will come back for some necessity.

I checked his credentials. HE IS REAL!!!!! !!!!
a laid-off MERCHANT MARINE!!!!!

He, this KNIGHT, is walking from Wilmington Delaware, PORt TO BILOXI, MS. to git a job on a OIL RIG.

He served a life-time on the bridges of tankers.
He may walk-funny. He has a 2 inch pipe in his left leg. DANGEROUS WORK ON TANKERS. He will be OK financially because of disability payments. THANKs, Uncle Sam..... .....

john.

PS: Nice think about working on the ships, YOU NEVER NEED A CAR!!!!! , just a shopping cart to prove your credentials.

Run from the battery side of the starter solenoid to one side of the ammeter. Other side of the ammeter to the side of the terminal block that has the wire from the regulator.
You should have a wire in your harness that is meant to run from the solenoid through the loop on the old style ammeter and on to the terminal block. You can cut that, crimp on connectors, and attach to either side of the new style ammeter.
