pat, I used to pull my 8N up near one of my cars and power the 12v timing light off it's battery to check the timing-my 8N is 12 v now so no problem. I also just did this this weekend on one of the kid's dirt bikes that doesn't have a battery. Works fine.

After our first rebuild, I asked a retired Ford tractor mechanic if I needed a 6V timing light to get it running just right. He laughed at me! He told me to do it by ear and it would be as close as any timing light could get it....I think he was right.
Good luck!

You may have to connect your timing light to a 12v battery for your light to be bright enough.

Pat..... ..ONLY the later roundcan sidemount 8N's (1950+) have a teardrop timinglight hole on flywheel housing and you can use a timing light on that one. The earlier square coil frontmount distributor N-Engine (9N/2N/8N) are timed ONLY by a 1/4" gap by removing the distributor and doing it on the kitchen table..... ..... Dell
