Can anyone tell me if they've tried using their N tractor for moving round hay bales around? Either with a spike on the three point or on a front loader? Or is the N tractors too light to handle them?
Thanks,
Rocky

Thanks for all the input guys, Sounds like I'll be better off buying square bales.
I just have 3 horses so I won't be moving a lot of hay.
Thanks again,
Rocky

I have had good success with my 9N lifting and carrying round bales.
I do have Zanes's "Live Thang" installed, so perhaps this accounts for the better results than some have had. If I get too heavy a bale, or they have gotten wet, it does make for a light front end - I have to take it slow to keep it from bouncing.

Judy..... ....where ever yer at, ya must be gettin' some wimpy litewait bales. Out west, the Washington Columbia Basin Alfalfa Hay Growers are even bailing 2000# roundbales. Its partially manpower efficency, partially speed of baleing, partially better neutriants retaining, which pleases the Dairy Guys, and partially the availablility of BIG TUBGRINDERS to make lowcost total rations feed for the dairy cows.

As a general rule, the N-Tractor just doesn't have the mojo to handle big round bales..... ....Dell

Wow! They must be monsters. Ours around here (eastern NC) top out at about 1000 pounds, many being closer to 750.

I can vouch for the fact the rear mounted spike will not lift one (at least the larger ones). A few years ago I needed to move several (approx 60 or so) of the bigger ones and the only tractor I had with 3 point was the 8N. I borrowed a spike and tried it. I did get them moved, but the only method that worked was backing into them and basically pushing them in reverse where I needed them. Obviously this only worked to move short distances, but did what I needed which was getting them out of the field on fairly level ground. My lift was weak at the time with a bad relief valve so all it would do was take a little weight off to make it easier to push. Not a very effective solution, and probably hard on the tractor.

Rocky..... ...Good N-Hydraulics can lift about 750# before the frontwheels start flappin' innna the breeze. Lotta roundbales are 1000# or more. Remember N's were designed in 1938 way before roundbales were even thought of in 1960's.

N-Front End Loaders max out about 500# and the skinny tires and no power steering make moving roundbales very "iffy" to say the least.

Howsomevers, all is not lost. Get/make a "doodle-bugg" trailer to pick-up your roundbale. This is a 2-wheel trailer with an over-the-top clamping hook. I don't have a convient source for one, but try www.farmshows.com? Do a web search..... ...Dell
