I sure could use some help! I was cutting grass on my 8n over the weekend and stop to move some tree limbs. I returned to the tractor the put it in gear and no go in any gear but the pto still turns fine. Whats up, could I have lost a clutch? but I don't understand the pto. Thanks for any help! Ron

Broken ring gear bolt/rivets to carrier.

Broken transmission to differential coupling.

Broken pinion shaft. (Less likely(

Remove the PTO shaft from the tractor and then jack up one rear wheel so it doesn't catch and take off. Look into the opening where the PTO shaft was removed while the tractor is running and in first gear at an idle. If the Ring gear is turning but the carrier is not the bolts or rivets are all broken.

Remove the left rear axle trumpet housing and you will be able to remove the whole differential assembly. Be careful not to drop any of these heavy parts on your foot. Heavy stuff in there.

You can get replacement ring gear bolts to replace the rivets.

When you clutch it, i assume the pto stops, and when you release the clutch the pto comes back.. if so, clutch is fine.. ( if clutch was stuck engaged pto wouldn't stop.. if was stuck disengaged.. pto wouldn't spin.

My duess is more towards the rear of the tranny.. like output , or ring pinion area.

good luck.

perhaps pull the inspection cover and see what you can see.. get someone to help you modulate the clutch pedal , etc, and watch for movement in the tractor rear end, etc.

I'm sure you'll get more refined answers.
