Just purchased a '50 8N to do some bush-hogging around my place. Runs great when cool with about 40 psi oil pressure. The pressure drops to around 20 when fully warmed up. So far, so good? (Should I use a heavier oil for this oil pressure?) While mowing this afternoon, I noticed that the engine RPMs slowly drop, the engine almost stalls, then revs back to normal. This is not the result of heavier grass load. Anyone have any ideas that could cause this behavior?

The oil pressure is fine..at 20 hot. Many guys have hot oil pressure in the single digits...

Spec for that tractor should be sae 30 anyway. When they get rel worn engines some got to sea 40 to get a little more use before rebuild.

As the other gentleman pointed out, could be lots of things.. bad key switch.. ( check with a wire to jumper around it ).. or even a plugged vent int he gas tank.. try loosening the gas cap...or even a manifold leak that opens up when warm... check your manifold nuts to make sure they are tight.
If it is coil, you might need a replacement.. it isn't too bad an idea to have an extra one anyway.

Let us know if you find any problems, and write us back. we'll try to help.

good luck,

I've read about the key switch problem. What I don't understand is how this acts up after 45-60 minutes of operation. Wouldn't this show up immediately?

Pokie..... .....gunked up ignition switch contacts keep getting hotter with time of use. The hotter they get, the less battery volts/amps pass thru the contacts. Usually about 15 minutes and not enuff power goes thru the contacts to keep the sparkies hott-enuff to keep engine running. Takes about 2 hrs for ignition switch to cool off so you can re-start tractor..... ...Dell

It could be caused by a number of things...Maybe fuel starvation or a failing electrical component...

If it runs for about 45 min's or so and then starts actin' up..it could be a bad coil...After the insides of the coil cool off..it'll crank and run again....

You may also wanna check your sediment bowl fuel screen, along with the one in the tank, and the one at the carb elbow..for buildup that would deprive the engine of sufficient fuel..
