I put the N-series use survey on the board(now it's in the archives) last week. That was just my personal opinion on the subject and If anyone was offended by what I said then I am sorry. I guess I took my anger out on city folks. I kind of people from the city who build and live in new houses around here. One is really close He is doesn't like the smell of my Hogs and often conplains. He has a 8N that he mows with. I just hate to see fields around my farm being used for houses. I guess they just don't know anybetter, they don't feel the same way about the land because they have never farmed, doesn't make them bad people nessesarily either. I am just pro-farmland preservation I guess. Thanks to the many who responded, whatever you use your "N" for.

I was born and raised in small town central Iowa (a city boy according to the FFA guys). I started helping put up hay when I was in Junior High (now called "Middle School") I had several farmers that I was a regular for. One had an 8N I got to pull the hay rack with. This would have been in the early 60's. I didn't know it at the time but the N bug bit me early even though I was a "city" kid. Growing up and still living just outside my home town on 10 acres of "not-so-farmable" ground.(I do work in the "big" city of Des Moines). Over the years I have seen the urban sprawl, known people who were family farmers who just couldm't make it farming anymore, seen prime farmland (good black dirt) go to residential, seen the family farms disappear to be replaced by conglomerates...From all this I can see both sides to all stories. We all need to keep our basic respect for others and retain our "manners" no matter what walk of life we are N-ing in. It will work for all of us and we'll get along better that way. Good Neighbors goes a lot farther than just the guy next door.

Unfortunately I am one of those "city folks" but no offense taken. I grew up on a small farm in the hills of East Tennessee and we farmed cattle, sheep, and Burley Tobacco. Even in the 60's things were starting to get tight and all my family held factory jobs etc to "support the farm". Maybe we were just bad farmers! Anyway, as a kid I hated working in the tobacco and dreamed of college and wearing a tie. Got the tie. Now all I want is a farm to support. Have an "N" which is a good way to relax while saving up enough to get a small homestead. Fixing it up and doing some chores with it. Have even made some money with the rotary cutter.
Around here -Central Virginia- It seems like everything is going to conglomerates and migrant workers with "industrial style" farming. It is a shame and it cuts down on the nice quail hunting. I drive up to either Wisconsin or Minn every year for a week long grouse hunt with my setters and I am awed by the size and scope of the farms in the midwest. That black dirt must beg to be planted. I envy you fellas. ds

try holding on to 17 acres in south western connecticut. largest privatly owned parcel in town full of heavy residential development. my wife's family's farm. her father and his brothers either found other ways to make living and feed families or passed on to a better place. town wanted taxes, so changed status to residential and jumped them up by two thirds.thats big money around here. almost went delinquint(with money hungry developers clawing at the delinquint list. town and developers get along very well here). my wife and her siblings pooled their resources and fought the town (with state's help, because at the "11th hour"they found it smart to be pro farm these days). town finally stepped back after 2yrs with state recomendation. cut taxes back down by that 2 thirds. state required plan/progress,so we're putting a LOT of time into it (ain't no hobby)! small nursery with four 100ft green houses, perrenial fields, evergreens(xmas trees),pumpkins and corn(for the yuppies to buy)and then we have to go to work(i build stairs/rails/newels so the yuppies can put them in their new zillion square foot houses). ( my fellings honestly go out to all you real farmers who have so much to hold on to) so my 2n does us a great service. didn't cost an arm and a leg and it's fairly easy to use/work on(w/help from you fine folks). great history and it's almost as pretty as my wife. wow,did i say all that drivel. sorry, good nite

John Gorka is the artist, "Jack's Crows" is the CD, "Houses in the Fields" is the song.

First line: "They're growing houses in the fields between the towns..."

You get the idea. Good song, speaks a lot of truth.

I have 2 N's... and only 5 measly acres (sorry) and 2 horses. What I do with my N, I couldn't do it with more, or less of a
tractor. It's PERFECT!!!

Even if it sits there and looks good, it is a part of our history. Oh, if only my N's could talk, what stories they could tell. I would
listen for hours..... .... Wouldn't you????

Joel, I took a look at your full message. You will need to remove any curse words in order to post. Kim has a foul language filter installed that prevents any profanity from being posted. Insert an asterisk or something in place of a letter or two and you'll get your message across without being censored.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

And the new tenants never seem to let you hunt either! Farmers are usually good about sharing their land for such pursuits. I can think of a few people who need posted signs nailed to the foreheads!

Sorry just spouting...

I enjoyed the posts on the survey, I was happy to see so many Ns earning a living, and hear that people who just like to play with theirs are proud too!

Could you really expect people to farm with an N? Or a CA for that matter? you got to be kidding me I'm one of the guys who bought five acres of country land that used to be a corn field. That's because the local formers couldn't make enough money farming, so they sold it to me and my neighbors and now are retired.

Why would anyone want to be a farmer? The only successful farms left are run like a business. half milllion dolllar pieces of equipment, government regulation. three milkings a day, till and plant all night..... get used to it, those days of small family farms are long gone.

In my hometown there were 38 working farms in 1980. Now there are Zero. But a lot of the land is still farmed by a "Businessman" the kind of guy you don't like.

I too like to think the old fashioned ways were better, but life goes on. The one thing we can all pass on from days past is good manners. And good manners aren't when you come to a place where Ford enthusiests gather, and try and claim we all drive junk, which is what you did in your last post.

Take care
Steve

I don't expect anybody to farm with A CA OR 8N ONLY! Just as a tractor for raking hay, pulling wagons, some plowing when the other tractors break down, light stuff. Still working not playing. When You said some farmers weren't making enough money farming, well, some didn't have a choice, it was either sell off some lots or be foreclosed by the bank. This was during the eighties when Prices were so bad.
Why would anyone want to be a farmer? That's easy for me. 5 generations of farmers in my family including myself. Still going strong. Gotta keep the 124 acres going. No I don't make much profit on it, I'm happy to break even most years. The days of the family farm are not gone yet as long as the kids are still interested in being the next to inherit it. If you don't think your N is junk than don't listen to me, just my thoughts. But I don't have a problem with the 1,000 acre neighbors, I can't blame them for expanding, they don't try to put me out of business on purpose.

ACH.....why don't you go over to the AC forum, and talk about your CA. We all own N's, and are happy. Life is too short for picking fights you can't win. Take a deep breath, and settle down. You are gonna stroke out on us with all that pent up hostility.

I had a CA years ago. I loved that hand clutch, and it was a great tractor for raking. Someday I want to get one with a belly mower. But my Ford is a lot less expensive to get parts for, has a three point hitch, and works like a charm . this morning I plowed my driveway....it was 10 degrees out, and I had fun. I wouldn't have been any happier with a CA, or a Kubota for that matter.

I hear your frustration, but deal with it. Lot's of people lose their jobs, and the successful ones deal with it and move on, and others spend the rest of their lifes with an attitude. And that is not very healthy.....

Good Luck
Take Care
Steve

Dear ACH...

I live in rural McHenry County, Illinois. Our county is growing in population faster than any other county in Illinois, and is ranked #8 nationwide in population growth. Our infrastructure (roads, schools, etc.) are pushed to the limit daily due to our increased numbers. From my window I can see several rooftops of houses where three years ago, there were none.

I hear your frustration over urbanization and all the trouble it brings. 30 years ago, my father bought farmland here for $150.00 an acre. Now, if you can find a 5 acre parcel for under $100,000.00, you are lucky.

Hang tough, and don't let it worry you. We have several newcommers near where I live who use shiney restored 8N's to mow their lawns, and they look really out of place. It is something about how uncomfortable they look, or the way they are dressed, or just how concerned they are about scratching the paint. And believe me, you won't hear them contributing to this board because they wouldn't know where to start when it comes to repairing their tractors. However, they sure do complain when the piece of property next to where they live getts developed. They must think that they bought the view when they bought their property.

And of all the things I have done with my 1946 2N, snow plowing, soil plowing, disking, bush- hawgging, and pulling my lawnmower out of the soft areas of the lawn when it gets stuck, the most fun is giving my 3yr old son rides.

Whether it be a ford, a-c (almost bought a model c), or i-h (dad had a farmall h), tractors are part of who we are. They represent American inginuity and independence. They are direct decendants of the horse and as much a part of our progress.

We hear you, and we understand what you are going through. And do me a favor - give your hogs a little extra cabage tonight and then say hi to your neighbor.

Well said Ed, You should see what they did to the area I grew up in, Greenwich, CT. When I was a kid I remember having horses, pigs, chickens and at one point even a pet bear and this was on only 2.48 acres! That was a long time ago, now there are half million dollar houses just the other side of the stone walls. To escape the "snobbish" attitudes that came with the houses I moved 40 miles north. My brothers and I still own the property and are contemplating selling it off. What's 2.48 acres worth in Greenwich? The realtor told us 2.6 million, she keeps calling saying that she has buyers!.
But you are correct they have no mechanical ability.. If it needs fixin' American-Express or Master-Card it! And HOGS you say? Sure, they got Hogs out here, those are the brand new Harley-Davidson's they bought on their credit card and joined the Harley Owners Group! Just don't ask them how they work, all your going to get is maybe a stock quote or a financial status. Hey ACH, Why not give them hogs of yours a whole truck load of cabbage! And, Do you rent them out?? You gave me an idea. ;>)
