I have a 9N and a tree farm. I want to put in some food plots for the deer. I can get an old JD 2 bottom plow for free (not a 3 pt). Will the 9N pull this plow through virgin medow? Will I have to rough the area up first or just use 1 of the plows first? Maybe disc first? I am not a farmer and have never plowed a field. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

Andy, just do it! I pull a 2 bottom JD Model 52 with my 8N and it's pretty dicey at times. That untouched ground will be packed pretty good sitting idle over the years so don't get discouraged. Just keep hammering at it and you'll get it busted up. I'd wait for end of March though. The ground needs to be wet but not muddy. Then disc, plant etc.

I would definitly plow first on virgin soil. Escpecially if it has lots of rocks, roots etc. If you disk first your likely to tear the disk up.
The 9N will struggle pulling the 2-bottom pull-type in heavy soil. Maybe you could have a neighbor come in with a bigger tractor to pull the plow. Here your feeding the deer, which is fine and I can't keep the boogers out of the sweet corn patches. I guess They gotta eat to, but should stick to my Feed corn fields where it won't make as big of a difference. They were in the neighbors yard eating flowers right in front of them because they are so hungry during the winter. They know he doesn't hunt and sometimes they sleep in his open-end machine shed.

If the plough is free, take it :-)

Pull type plows take more horsepower to pull than 3 point. If your ground is heavy like clay you probably won't be able to go very deep.

Don't plow, just lightly disk, maybe a couple of times a few weeks apart. Mix different seeds together and spread by hand or use a broad cast spreader. Some say to go over it with a harrow to lightly cover the seed so birds won't eat it but I doubt that would be a problem.

Check with your county, state or local university ag extensions. Most have web sites now. Lots of good free info. tailored for your area. Might even be some programs available for financial help.
