I put new shoes on this tractor, cleaned everything up real good. New sure seals. Tire up brekes work good , Tractor rolling no brakes The shoes rub the drums like they are spose to but don't stop it. Beveled the corners on the shoes & emery clothed the drum surface. But still no stopping. The tractor has a loader on it, could this be to much weight o stop???

I went back and reread that brake adjustment. It does say back off until a 'very slight brake drag.'
My mistake sorry. I have to go back and redo that one 8N wheel now.
So you have it properly adjusted and no brakes huh? Do it like DellWA suggests: set em a bit tight to wear them in to shape and keep tweaking the adjustment as the shoe wears to the shape of the drum. That's my plan....

Rusty, I've got a '51 N w/ a loader, and after I adjusted the brakes & leveled the pedals, it will toss me over the steering wheel if I'm not careful! So, I don't think the loader is your problem. Like the book says....adjust them until the wheel does not turn at all, then back off just a bit.

Rusty..... .what Rob sez..... ..and..... .
UNLESS you had your brake drums "trued" and your new brake shoes "arched" to match your drum curve, then unlike automobile brake drums, LETT'EM DRAG. The drag will contour your new linings to the drum in short time. And KEEP ADJUSTING.

While 9N's will NEVER be world class STOPPING machines, your front end loader weight will effect reartire TRACTION more than stopping ability..... ....Dell

Rusty I have a hard time adjusting those brakes like it says. Did you do it like they say?
Adjust the brake with the wheel on it until you can't turn the wheel and then back it off just until you can turn the wheel. It doesn't say until you can turn the wheel easy, it says just until you can turn it. After you've driven it some feel of the hub to be sure it's not too hot. If it is just back it off a touch.
That is hard for me to do. I just don't want them that tight but I'm fixen to do it anyway. Is that the way you did it?
