Pulsing oil pressure gauge

OK, long story short. I rebuilt the engine in my 8N. Replaced oil pressure gauge because the old one "pulses". In other words, at idle, the oil pressure pulses from say, 5 psi to 15 psi. Average about 10. It's a little better at higher rpm's, but still does it. Old pressure gauge did it, new pressure gauge does it too. Also did it before the overhaul.

Is this normal?

By the way, the engine has an oil filter and the oil pressure relief valve is clean and the spring is pretty stiff.

I believe there should be an orificed fitting either screwed on to the back of the guage or where the oil line screws into the block. This will help stabilize the reading. Sometimes the orifice is built into the fitting of the guage.

Hi Al,

My 8N oil pressure gauge pulses slightly (maybe 3-5 psi) when first cranked. The pulsing stops when it reaches operating temperature. I rebuilt my engine about 2 years ago. I don't worry about it too much as long as I've got oil pressure. Rick H. Ga.

Al..... ...if'n yer OLD oil pressure gauge pulsed and yer NEW oil pressure gauge pulses, then there is something common between the two of 'em. Think BAD OIL PUMP..... .....respectfully, Dell

Dell,
I replaced the oil pump gears, bushing, and shaft when I rebuilt the engine. Actually, I bought the parts and the machine shop did the work. Reaming the bushing was beyond my tools capability.

Any other ideas?

Replace the Oil Presure "ByPass Valve and spring" you can buy them at the tractor parts places. Mark H.

I don't think I would worry about that much movement. If you replaced the pump you know it is good, only thing I can think of is maybe the oil filter is working in a way it flows a little hard then easy causing the gauge to fluxuate some. But that is realy drawing straws for a reason. Mark H.

Well, it bothers me because the oil pressure is only about 5 - 10 psi hot. Hard to tell because of the oil pressure gauge fluctuations. This is the same as before the overhaul.

I suppose it's possible that the oil pump housing is worn which would cause excessive clearance which could cause this problem, but (like you) i'm grasping at straws. AND i'm getting tired of throwing money at the thing and not seeing results. Frustrating.

I remove the oil line that goes to the oil filter and plugged it with a pipe plug. Absolutely no difference.

I also tried putting a brand new 0-30 psi oil pressure gauge on it and you couldn't hardly see the needle it was moving back and forth so fast.

I hate to spend over $200 for a new oil pump and pull the tractor apart to replace it and still have this problem.

Thanks for all the feedback Mark. If you think of anything else, post it.

I had a oil pump on my power wagon do what you were talking about. It looked good inside no signs of wear either. Replaced it presure came up another 10-15 pounds and when it got hot it did not drop 20-25 lbs. It must have been worn enought to lose presure when hot? Mark H.
