I know NH recomends the 134 oil for the 8N but I want a 90 weight oil. I think I remember somebody saying GL1 was acceptable. Is that correct? How about GL5?

Hello,

Check your local Walmart..... .they sell the 90w Gl-1 stuff for 20-25 bucks in the 5 gallon bucket. Works great down here in Houston, TX.

Haven't found that at local Wal-Marts on the northwest side of town... I've been buying my GL-1 at TSC... $40/5 gallons...

Guess I'll take a closer look at Wal-Mart...

I also have been getting my oil at TSC... I gett he 134 equivalent for my New Holland and NAA, and I use the 90wt mineral oilmarked 'ford' for the 8n... The 134d stuff is like 22/5gallons.. the 90wt marked for ford is only a bit more expensive.. like 25/5 gallons.

When you go back in.. try looking for the blue label 5 gallon pail.. marked 'ford 1939-1952.. sounds like you may be buying their generic gl-1.. and that is why it was 40 bucks...

Either way... I like the 90wt in the 8n.. and like one of the others said.. I'll keep using it as long as I can find it.. and havn't seen a problem yet.

I was in our local Walmart yesterday and they had a 5 gal can of the GL1 for $20.97. I am doing some checking of the hydraulic system so had drained part of the oil. Will drain the balance and replace with the GL1.
Thanks
Paul

I had a very hard time locating the 90W GL1 oil. I finally ran a search under "Shell Oil US" and found that they manufacture a straight 90W GL1 mineral oil called "Dentax." They have a distributor locator on their site. Used that and found a distributor that was on my way to work - dumb luck. Stuff was expensive - $43 for 5 gallons.

Was in a Tractor Supply store (TSC) today in North Dakota. They have 90 weight GL-1 oil in 2 gallon jugs. It specifically states on the jug "for older Ford tractors, and lists ages and models pertaining to the 9N-2N-8N.

Some have been happy with the new, lighter oil, and some have noticed more leaks, or reduced hydraulic function when hot. I have a 1948 8N that sees hard use almost daily in the hot summertime, and have used nothing but 90 weight GL-1 in it and have had NO hydraulic or rear end problems. I do not intend to use the lighter oil as long as the old stuff is available. Heck, it's worked for 55 years, can't be too bad!
