Just got off the phone with the local F/NH dealer, the guy that sells the impliments. They handle Bush Hog brand mowers. His explaination of the hp ratings; ie, 35-70ph, for a particular mower went like this:
The mfr cannot say that a 35hp tractor will operate that mower in all conditions. For instance, a 35hp tractor will do fine with that mower cutting weeds but if it's a stand of heavy grass that mower might well require more hp. Makes good sense to me and I know it sure makes a difference what you are cutting. He said if the mfr promised a 35hp tractor could do any job with that mower they would get 1/3 of em back every year.
He also said they discourage guys from putting smaller impliments on larger tractors because they figure a lot of guys will replace broken shear pins with bolts and let the clutches go to crap and end up tearing up the impliment. Other then that and with the proper pins and maintained clutches or other protective devices you can hook whatever small impliment you want to your big tractor.
The good news is that he said come on down because he had some old conveyor belting he would cut a 60" piece off and let me have it to put across the front of my mower. Bush Hog Squielers use a piece of belting across the front and I asked him about that. He told me I could pay him whatever I thought it was worth.
Lowering the front of my hog 1 1/2" below the height of the back of the hog stopped most of those rocks but just the other day a rock came up to seat height and zinged in there right in one of the holes in the pan and popped me right on the butt! That did sting. For awhile too. Didn't even touch the pan. He said that belt will stop a lot of the dust too.
I'm happy and I will get that belt on before I mow again....

You know, I have read a lot of posts where folks have been hit from behind with debris, rocks, etc. while bush hogging. This has never happened to me. I have a pittsburg 240 brush hog. Do I have something special, or is my time comming?

I guess you won't get rocks if you aren't scalping. I mow a couple of miles of bar ditch and I can scalp the top edge if I straddle it wrong. That mower will fling some road gravel.
Keeping the front end lower then the rear sure makes a difference.
