I ground on the nut and put a 5' cheater on it. After bouncing on it some it came loose with a pop so hard it give me whiplash! Back of my neck hurts 90 minutes later and I have a headache but the dang nut is off!
Bad news is that the threads were stripped. Good news is that the hub and axel splines are in fine shape! They still have machining marks on them.
I thought this tractor didn't have enough hours to have a worn hub and axel. Other then this, I haven't found any real wear yet. You look at the king pin you can see where the bushing sits but it isn't really worn. Oh yeah the rear tires are worn from pushing that dirt around. They must really dig behind that dozer blade. They wore funny.
One of those $15 repair nuts should deal with the stripped threads. So long as less then 7/8" of threads is enough. I have 9/16" of worn threads and 5/16" of unused threads on that axel. I'm concerned that the repair nut will not get to the 5/16" of new thread because the hub only goes on the axel so far. I might get nearly another 1/8" of new thread so that would be 11/16" of threads.
I think the nut was more stripped then the axel, that's what it looks like anyway. Maybe that's wishful thinking.
I had to grind away nearly 1/4th of the nut along with that much of the thread part of the axel to cut the weld.
We'll see what we see when I get a repair nut.

That's what I was hoping to hear. Sounds like I have plenty of thread for that nut then.
