Well I got the PTO shaft out, and low and behold the PTO seal I was told on here "9n272" is wrong. The one one the tractor is a metal ring with several different seals inside that you must have to use a press to get out of the houseing. So now I have everything out and no part, and do you think I can find the correct one.....NO, no one around here seems to have, or can order one, that goes for my local ford dealer as well. So now it is back to the drawing board....

The original shaft would have a spring and pin to keep tension on the seal and the part# of the seal was 9N727 not 9N272, sounds like yours was upgraded the the one used after 1943, the seal is still available because it was used on hundreds of thousands of tractors but the new rubber seal is only 1/2 as thick as the old leather seal was because of technology.

Robert..... ...when I first answered your 9N PTO seal post, I told you that the seal was NLA and to replace your entire PTO shaft with new and improved late model 1 3/8" PTO shaft from 8N and that it would fit perfectly in your 9N. YOUR CALL..... ...Dell

Robert,

It ain't rocket science. You can do it two different ways. The first: drain the transaxle fluid, remove the four bolts holding in the axle, slide out the shaft, replace the seal, and reverse the procedure. The second is the same as the first, except you park the tractor nose down in a ditch (to avoid draining the fluid), then procede with the rest of the steps.

Good luck!

Ron

p.s.--Do yourself a favor and buy an FO-4 manual. It'll pay for itself.

Thanks, I wasn't sure of I had to pull the entire shaft or not via the moutning plate or not....
