The last number is an I definately, I used an acid method to raise the letter

Adam is correct. There would not, in most normal cases, be a letter after the number. The I is usually a 1. Of the 9N's I've seen or owned, the number one always looked alike a letter I.

If that's the case it is not a 40 model but into the 2N designation as Adam indicates.

Figuring that the "?" is a last digit, like a 1 or a 7,,, it would be a 1946 2N.
