I don't think you can get an 8n thermostat in an auto parts store. Most generally you will have to get it at a tractor store or from one of the sponsers here. The thermostat fits into the upper radiator hose a couple of inches up from the engine. Mine is overheating too and I strongly suspect a bad water pump. Not sure how to check it out, though. Maybe someone here will tell us both how to check the water pump. I can see water movement if I look into the radiator, but yesterday while bushhogging, Most of my coolant evaporated.

If your coolant goes missing there is probably a leak. Maybe the radiator has a hole or the hose is leaking on the end.
As for those Ford water pumps, and others even the new ones, you feel right under the pulley shaft and see if you fingers come out wet. If they do then replace the pump. You can see when the pump has been leaking if you get down and look under and behind the pulley. There will be a water stain.
I think it was Zane said he sqeezes silicone up that weep hole, maybe there are two weep holes on the N pump, and gets a lot more hours out of them.
First thing a water pump does is start leaking and if you replace them when that happens you most likely won't see one stop pumping. They pump right up to when the bearing shells out and the shaft is running on the pump housing and it's squeeling like a stuck pig and hot water is spraying all over the radiator and engine and it is a HUGE steaming mess!
Oh yes, you will know when that pump fails and stops moving water.

I refilled the radiator yesterday and put it in the barn. Checked today and no water had leaked out of the radiator. I'm 60 mi. away right now and can't check under the water pump for leaking water, but will when I go back down to the farm. But I'm thinking that the coolant overheated and escaped out of the overflow tube due to pressure. I only saw steam when I was on the tractor and couldn't really tell where the steam was coming from. Thanks for your help. Ron

Full-to-the-neck is WAY overfilled. Full cold is when the top of the core is covered, way below the neck. It will just blow out any overfill. That entire top tank of the radiator is for expansion.
That might be what you are seeing.

I generally fill to about 3" below the top of the radiator. I replaced about a gallon the spewed out. Maybe it just seemed to be overheating. I think I will invest in a thermomenter to install in the upper hose. That might be a better investment at this time than going for the water pump. Thanks again...Ron

I could be wrong but I don't think a thermostat will solve your overheating problem. The thermostat is just to get the engine to operating temp before it opens and allows the coolant to flow?!
