Picked up a new style one groove hydraulic lift piston today from our New Holland dealer for the 8N. Also got a new type of neoprene backer washer along with the "O" ring.
Does anybody have any experience they would tell
about how they got these parts into the piston groove and then installed the assembly into the cylinder? It looks like they will need to be stretched some to fit over the piston before they drop into the groove.

Thanks for any information or experiences you have had with this job.

" O " ring should slip right on into groove with a little help from WD40, the leather washer is boiled in water to soften it up a bit so it wont tear . You will get a great seal if done properly . Dont forget to hone the cylinder if it has any grooves in it , good luck .

Soak the leather backer ring in oil before trying to stretch it over the piston... the rubber O ring goes on the oil (inside) of the piston. Put the leather on first, it makes it easier to get it into the grove.

Good Luck, its a slippery task.

Robert

The backer washer from New Holland is now made of the same material the "O" ring is made of. Not leather.

I will clean up the bore of the cylinder.

Paul..... ....wheather the 1-groove backup washer is leather or neoprine, both the backup and "O" ring benefit from a soak in "HOT" water. (don't boil'em) Makes 'em eazier to stretch over the piston for installation. HINT: do not ROLL the rings down the piston, just slide 'em down into the groove..... ....Dell

Now that you got the how to's going, this is how not to. Don't handle the old piston with steel rings with your bare hands. It's heavier than it looks and the sharp rings will cut your fingers to the bone. As many as I've done, I made this mistake last week.
