I just picked up an early 8N and she is pumping a bit of oil. Now from reading the shop manual, it says to clean out the oil cap/ breather. Now this is plugged solid with crud. I am hoping this is my problem. Does this unit come apart to clean? I have it soaking now but it seems like it would be easyer if it came apart.

If the tractor's been sitting a lot you may be lucky enough to have it improve on the blow-by from the crankcase with use. I bought a Jubilee this spring and it was puffing lotsa smoke out the breather cap like your 8N. The first couple times I used it I figured it was definitely going to need rings really soon. I found the more I used it the less it puffed out the breather. I guess the rings were stuck from sitting (since '98) so much and loosened up from running. It still "breathes" a little but nothing like it was originally. I'll keep my fingers crossed that yours will do the same. Good Luck, Lee

Thats what I am hoping. After I changed the oil, it got a little better. The breather cap was plugged solid. Thats got to be doing something to increse the oil burning. Wish me luck.

Hey Paul-
It sounds like you have an original breather cap for the early 8N's and the 9N & 2N which has the front mount distributor, long oil fill tube on left side and the cap has a wire mesh inside along with an "X" or big cross stamped on top. It looks like these are assembled as a permanent unit-taking it apart might destroy the stamping. Manual says to just soak in kerosene and blow dry with air. I just soak mine in mineral spirits ( gas seems to take off the paint ) and use compressed air to blow out. The newer ones with the wing nut do come apart, but I don't think they fit right in the tube-too sloppy. I keep one old used cap for working and one NOS for show. I did notice last time that the wire mesh inside is getting pretty frumpy from blowing out, so I may switch to an old wing nut style for my work duties.

Yup Tim, thats the one I have.I do have an early tractor, and it has the "X" and everything. It seemed to clean up pretty good, I had it soaking most of the day. Lets just hope thats my smoking problem. [at least SOME of it]

Not all come apart. Mine has a wing nut at the top center with a replacable hair element. There's another one just a bit bigger round then the tube and it doesn't break down.
You can get the wing nut cap and the hair elements on some of the internet parts houses.
