I got a copy of "Restoring Tractor Magnetos" book for X-mas and see mention of a Coil/Condensor Tester in it for shaking down the old magneto. Ebay's got a couple out there but I can't tell if it's like what is described in the book. Do you guys use one?

Baggsy..... ...nope..... I was once shocked by a magneto as a "wee pup" and did a wee-wee and have left magnetos alone since then. (grin)

Yes, there are electronic testing devices, sometimes called "wheatstone bridges" and Q-Meters that can electrically measure various electrical charistics such as "inductance" of coils and "capacitance" of condensers. There is also a testing device called a "Megger" that can measure insulation quality. But with out manufacture specifications, all would be meaningless.

And no, I haven't checked out E-Bay for magneto testers.

And no, I don't give instructions on how to use Electronic Test Equipment on the N-Board. I'm an involuntarily retired Electronics Test Engineer from the Boeing Co..... ..Dell

I don't like the sound of that "involuntarily" retired part...can't say as I blame you. I did want to say thanks to you and those of this board for 'indirectly' helping me with the rewire on my old tractor. It has a one wire 6 volt generator with no ignition switch and I got it working good, even after I had a REAL discharge where I touched my battery cable to the dash where it hooks to the starter button. BUT I followed the mantra...many times and now it starts and charges GREAT. I got a handfull of old magnetos at a sale in a box of other great stuff that I didn't need, and thought I might SHOCK myself at what could be done to make them priceless, hence the question. Not many people out there doing it...maybe I'll just smear 'em up good with REPAIR GELL!!!
