Front axle support and pin ???

My 9N front axle pin (king pin) is 4" long not including the retainer on the front. My front axle support is 4-1/8" thru the bore to accept the pin. Should this bore be 4" also? I would think the pin goes into and should be flush with the back of the bore. Is this an indication that the axle support is bent in this dimension? I know the ears that support the radiator and sheet metal are somewhat bent. Does anyone have some measurements so I can straighten out the radiator/sheet metal attachment and the bore depth if it needs it?

Rick. I'm not sure that the 9N and 8N are the same when it comes to adjusting the width of the front wheels. I have a 9N and have moved them out and back and they didn't need any further adjustment. Now that you have the axle and radius rods off, check the ball connection at the transmission. They are probably well worn. Shim them up to remove as much wear as possible. Also the bolts that connect the radius rods to the axle. If they are loose, replace them. This will enable you to pick up every 1/16 inch of wear possible, which is what you want to do. I put in a little over 1/2 inch of shimes on the pin and wish now I had put in more. Bought them at the local hardware store. Good luck & safe tractoring. Ron

You are right about the spread at the pin and that it should be flush with the back of the bore. Lay a straight edge across the front of the support to see the bow. Beat it back into flat. Your pin is a gage. The ears will probably come back to true. That support is steel so it will bend ok.
Inspect the webbing inside the support for cracks. You might see some and ignore them or you might want to braze or weld some. The axle may have cracks in the webbing near the center.
That 'free floating' design is a loser. Ford added spacers in the 8N.
You can make a spacer with a piece of 3/4" flat steel formed to fit around the pin loosly. That 3/4" is what the 8N starts with. Add a couple-three machinery bushings at 1/10" until you can't add more.
My 8N has the 3/4 in front of the axle and the bushings behind. I can't remember how I set up the 2N.
Your N will handle like a car when you get rid of that 'free floating' and destructive nonsense.
The hood, radiator, shroud and grill will fit much better too.

Ok, I will start beating it into submission. I have a question on the spacers. Remember I have the 9N all apart with radius rods off at the moment. As you change the front wheel width, it seems to me the axle assembly must move a little forward and backwards (float). How do you determine the amount of spacers to add to the pin? Here is my guess:
set the wheel spacing at its narrowest and then fill the space in front of the pin with spacers. set the wheel spacing at its widest and then fill the space in back of the pin with spacers. This would give just the amount of float to cover the various wheel spacings.

Alternatively, fill both the front and back of the pin with spacers and adjust spacers whenever changing wheel spacing.

How do you do it?

The "Ford Operator's Manual for the 8N tractor" gives instructions for adjusting the wheel spacing and all you do is adjust the drag links. You don't change the spacers around for different gage and I can't see any reason a modified 9N/2N is any different.
I know I couldn't see it mattered at all where the spacers were located. I set the axle for certain clearance of the radiator, distributor, genny, etc and then assembled the axle extensions, radius rods, etc and then adjusted the drag links and the toe-in. I didn't have to force anything and I've never looked back.
Well I do inspect the entire front axle assy a few times a year to make sure everything remains tight and ship shape. Works good and looks fine.

The 9N/2N front end where the radius rods IS different from the 8N. The rad. rods on the 9N/2N attach to the adjustable axle arms, where the 8N rad. rods attach to the center axle section. When adjusting a 9N/2N's wheel spacing, the center axle section HAS to move fore and aft, unlike the 8N.

That's what I hear. I messed with it some to see but it just didn't seem to matter. I moved the extensions and I could still pull the center axle and extensions together with hand pressure even without changing the spacing. It still feel into place. Maybe I didn't check from maximum gage to minimum but it doesn't matter I never do that anyway. I leave the gage set for my hog anyway.
If I were to change the gage I would probably check it.
