Proud owner of 1949 8N. Runs great, starts great, good power, use no oil. Question? When I start the tractor summer or winter it has almost no oil pressure. Run it for 5 to 10 minutes, pin the throttle to its ears and back to fast idle quickly and there it is, mid range oil pressure. What do you think, faulty guage ? oil pump? Thanks

Suspect you have the oil pickup tube from the oil pump to the pickup screen loose. Fairly common problem with these old Ns. Takes a long time to "suck up", prime, the oil to the pump. Drain the oil and check the round pickup tube that the screen goes into for being tight. If you can move this part at all the pump will suck air instead of oil, hence the delay in pressure. Serious problem. You are running the bearings dry on start up for a long time. Good luck, ray

Easiest way to see if oil is flowing while she is running is to slowly loosen the the hex bolt on top of the filter cannister. If the pump is pumping, you should get a swell around the seam.
Don't go too far or you will have a mess :-)

This is not a real indication of getting oil through the motor, but it should tell you if your pump is pumping during the time when you have no pressure showing on the guage...

Thanks guys. Oil is 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in the summer. Its just strange acting. I do suspect the guage. It acts like its stuck and then it just pops up. Why would a guage stick for so long and then consistly pop up I don't know.

What weight oil are you using?
If it is a heavy straight oil, that might be the problem.
If you just let it run 1/4 to 1/2 trottle without reving it up, will the oil pressure come up? I would first go to a lighter oil 20-40 or similar (IF you are using a heavy straight oil.)

Loosen the oil filter line at the engine block and see if you are getting oil there when you start it up. If so, go to your oil pressure gauge and disconnect/loosen the line at the gauge.(assuming you have the oil line to the gauge and not a sending unit). If you have oil at both places, it is probably your gauge acting up. You may be able to clean it up and get it to work, but they arn't that expensive.
If none of these work, you probably have a pump problem. cleaning out the oiling system may cure it, but use caution.
Hope this helps. I'm sure othere will have some input too.

The only positive way to tell, is to get another oil pressure gauge and plug it into the "T" fitting on the block.
Happy Motoring
