will a 40 9n engine fit a 48 8n?

The engines are identical from 39 through 50. As long as the distributor is up front on the camshaft end it will fit. The "51" style came out in 1950 with the side distributor but is actually a 51 model.

Im thinking they will bolt right up, dont know, never done it . Ive been wrong before . Good luck .I understand they are the same engine minnus a few H P .

Yes, the only change to the engines were in about 1951 the distributer was moved to the side. And at some time the cylinder sleeves were changed from cast iron to steel. But all these engines were interchangable. No conversion required for fit. Only part changed for fit was from a straight to helical gear cut on the shaft from the motor to the transmission. look at this part and use the correct one if one is different.

the change was late 1950 when they went to the side dist.
