'46 2N was converted to 12v when Dad bought it. It starts from the ignition key. Can I install correct, keyed, on/off switch, and wire the original starter button back in, or do I need to find a 12v starter button assembly? Restated: Does a 12v system require a 12v starter button, or will the original (I'm assuming original) 6v starter button, mounted by the gear shift, work?

Thanks!
Rich

It would seem your tractor must have an add-in solenoid. A key switch cannot switch the full starter current without help.

I would just keep the existing key switch and solenoid, but re-route the solenoid's pull-in-coil wire from the key switch to the original push button. You will have to figure out whether the solenoid uses "ground to start" (like the 8N) or hot-to-start (like most cars).

Just guessing, it's probably "hot to start", so connect one side of the push-button to battery +, the other side to the solenoid. You can use 12AWG wires for this.

Leave the heavy battery cables on the solenoid.

Done in this manner, the push-button never sees the starter current, and merely switches a few amps to the solenoid.

Thanks for the info David. It sounds like I should be able to pursue this avenue.

Rich..... ..... CAUTION: STUDY your 2N's 12 volt conversion scheme CAREFULLY.

BECAUSE..... to have an ignition key start, the converter would have had to add a keyswitch operated STARTER SOLENOID. (probably a 4-terminal automotive starter solenoid) 2N's did NOT come with a starter solenoid. They came with a mechanically operated 2-terminal starter SWITCH, which is mechanically SAFETIED and remotely operated thru the gearbox neutral linkage by a "jiggle stick".

And while you "could" reverse engineer the 12 volt conversion so you are safetied thru the neutral interlock. There are other ways to accomplish this. AND inaddition, this current conversion may have made use of different switch contacts to prevent the problem of alternator "back-feed" to the ignition coil that prevents the tractor engine from being turned off.

If you don't throughly understand the current electrical scheme, I would be highly reluctant to recommend changing something that is currently WORKING..... ....respectfully, Dell

Thanks Dell. You're right about the different solenoid, and I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics. I think I'll try David's suggestion, after I draw up the current wiring diagram and check back with y'all.

Rich, I have a '41 9N that is converted to 12v and I use the key switch to turn the tractor on and then use the starter button down by the tranny shifter to engage the starter(the button looks like original equipment and i don't think it matters if you are running 6v or 12v thru it) . This works just fine and really is the way to go because you have the benefit of the lockout on the starter button which will not allow you to use the starter while the tractor is in gear.

The original 6 volt switch shouldn't care.

My $.02 worth,
Danny
