I have a good line on a Woods RM48 finish mower. Does anybody here use one of these with their N tractor? Is this mower too small to use with an 8N? If so, what is the minimum size I should be looking for? Thanks for your help...

Hi, I've got a Ford 901? mower on my tractor that I picked up used for $300.00. Yes you don't have a full coverage of your tires with the 48" mower, on the other hand, I've done some mowing with my neighbours 20 hp riding mower and 48" deck, and the N does a better job mowing with the mower, at a faster ground speed, and is quieter to operate.

With sharp set of blades, you should be able to mow in 2nd gear, although I mow usually in 1st gear with my 2N and just enjoy the seat time.

I can mow about 3 acres in less than 2 hours, so you should pick up some time with the N.

I think that my Ford mower is from the 80's and is a rebadged woods mower, as the replacement blades say woods on them. It's a very durable mower, I'm now replacing a few parts like the ground shoes, and the bushings on the wheels at the back, but the gearbox, pto, drive pulleys, bearings etc, seem to be bulletproof.

I'd try it for a year, then you can always fix it up , put a coat of paint on it, sell it for a profit, and upgrade to a 5 fter if you need to.

I'm thinking if you set the rear tires on the tractor as narrow as possible you'll be pretty close to the 48" width of the mower.

Andy,
I have a Woods RM360 (5' side discharge). The 5' matches the width of the tractor nearly perfectly. I noticed you also said something about mowing in 3rd gear. 3rd may be way too fast for getting a decent job done. A lot may depend on how thick the grass is, but I wouldn't count on getting a good job from mowing in 3rd.

Get a new King Kutter 72" finish mower for anywhere from $850 to $1095, excellent mower. Works great on the Ford N Tractor. Why pay more? Five foot KK works well on the N also, cost is lower too.

It'll work real good, but it's a little small for an 8N. I pull a 5' Woods RM-59, it matches the track of the tractor wheels. 6' is a little too much for the 8N in my experience.

All Woods mowers are built like tanks, and if maintained, will last forever, which explains why they command such a high price.

Andy, A 4' cutting swath is not very wide. My lawnmower is 48". Trimming will not be an option since most N's have their tires wider than 5'. Personally, I pull a Woods RD7200 6' finish mower with my 8N. I am very satisfied with this combination. Philip.

I'm not looking for a finish mower for trim work. I have some wide open areas that need a finish cut and the ground speed of my rider (48" cut) just doesn't get it. I figured with third gear on the 8N and at least a 48" cut. I could cut my mowing time in half. 4 acres with a 48" rider takes way too long...

Andy,

If you mow in 3rd gear, plan to leave a LOT of streaks and standing weeds! I only mow in 1st gear, and that even is too fast sometimes. Get a bigger mower and mow more slowly! You'll do a better job and be more satisfied with the results.

Ron

I paid $1600 4 years ago new. You can get a new one now for $1800 at Hendrens Implements in Franklin, Indiana. Ask for TJ. Philip.
