More smoke

I have a 51 8n. When I start it cold, it huffs and puffs a greyish smoke for about 30 seconds after it starts. Like a flooded engine clearing out. After that it still puts out a greyish smoke, especially when I rev the motor and the back of the tractor is covered in black down around the rear housing. I have tried adjusting the carb and no difference. Runs good otherwise, plenty of power, no overheating. I do have to pull the choke out for a second to get it to start most of the time when hot.
Any help appreciated. Sweating a ring job. Have not taken a compression check yet.

The antifreeze is clean. Don't think i'm having oil get into the water or water get into the oil. Antifreeze is clean. Does use a little oil, but not bad. Plugs get black and gummed up a bit. Carb too rich? Adjustment on carb no help. I think a compression check in called for and then I'll get back and let you know what I find. Still wondering if the carb. could be the problem.
Thanks, Pat

White smoke is steam and you can smell the antifreeze I believe; anyway it sells like a radiator some how. Black smoke is fuel; too rich a fuel mix or poor combustion, like that. Blue smoke is oil. That's a good place to start to figure out what's what.
Can you smell 'crankcase' in the radiator? Is there a white or light brown goo on the tip of the oil dipstick? Can you see tiny, shiney droplets on the tip and threads of a spark plug? That would all indicate oil/water mix.
Start it up and close the main jet all you can to lean out the fuel mix. Maybe you can see a change in the smoke. It might want to run a 3/4-turn out. That's pretty lean though. If it backfires turn is out 1/8-turn at a time until it doesn't back/miss fire.
Nothing wrong with the tractor just because you need to give it a shot of choke to start it. That's the instructions in the operator's manual anyway.

We bought an 8n years ago with a bad rearend. We finally came up with the parts to fix it. When I started it up, man did it smoke a blue fog. Didn't have problems with bugs bothering you when it was ran. Ran it a couple of years until it started fouling spark plugs on a regular basis then tore it down and overhauled it.

Excessive soot / black smoke might indicate a rich mixture.. but then it might just be accumulating from the initial huffs during starting..

You see 5-10 year old cars fogging the roads all day.. a few puffs from a 50 year old tractor isn't much to fret about.

I know others will tell you different but if it runs good and strong, isn't hard to start and isn't losing anti-freeze(usually white smoke) or using an excessive amount of oil let it smoke. Lotsa these little tractors smoke some for years before they require a teardown. Your call though.
