Hello, I just recently bought a bit of acerage in Oregon, and I am really new to the whole tractor thing. I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the starter on these things.

There is a spring that locks into the starter, but then on the other side of the spring, there is nothing that fastens it to the tractor. So, it is just rubbing inside the tractor case. (It almost looks like there should just be a small piece of metal sticking out of the tractor to catch the spring so that end does not spin.) Again, you gotta love my non-mechanical terms! Sorry I don't really know this stuff yet! However, I think in a few more years I will be farm/ranch friendly!

Thanks again!

If you could post a pic, it would help us narrow info down for you.

Not to worry about your non-mechanical terms. Ya gotta learn 'em as ya go like we all have. That big spring thingy that's rubbing inside the bell housing(tractor case) is the starter clutch. The first one I looked at seemed like it should have something for the end of it to fit into or somethin' but they don't. The starter clutch(spring) just kinda hangs back there over the flywheel(big round dealy inside the case with teeth on it that the one end of the starter clutch meshes into). The starter clutch(spring) is held in place by the starter itself bolted into the bell housing(tractor case). If it's rubbing the starter bushings are probably worn out letting it slop around. I hope that makes sense to you. If not ask about what don't and somebody will explain it better than I did hopefully.
Good Luck, Lee

It's also possible that the starter clutch itself has broken and isn't mounted on the armature shaft of the starter motor as it should be.
Good Luck, Lee
