49 8n has 110 to 115 psi compression, bout 15 psi oil press when hot and I get what I describe as more of a tapping noise (as apposed to a knock)when the engine is fully warm and running at hi speed. The noise reduces with a reduction in engine speed. I am supposing a loose rod bearing but was wondering if anyone has experienced this with somthing like a sticking tappet ? It just dosent sound like a rod to me form my experience. Thnx Bman

Could be a noisy valve. Get 2' or so of garden hose and listen to the valve chamber covers. You can use that hose to listen all over the engine to get close to the noise. If it's a valve then don't be shy about removing the valve chamber cover to look see. Check the valve clearance while you are in there. Regardless of what some will say, removing a head and doing a little vakve work is no big deal requiring one to overhaul the entire engine. You can pull the head in the morning, work a valve, clean it all up, and have it running after supper. If you lack shade tree mechanic experience then it will end up taking all weekend the first time.
Replacing the valves and guides in one cylinder will cost you about $50 including a headgasket. Replacing only the exhaust valve and guide, not a bad way to go, will cost $15-$20 less.
