Has anyone actually used a middle buster? I just bought one today and am not sure how to adjust it. I put it on with a long toplink, but it keeps tripping the draft control. I then shortened the toplink and I only get about 6" penetration. This is real hard packe clay. Maby I should just get a subsoiler tooth for it.

Pitch:

I use the middlebuster all the time to lay out my garden (it's long and skinny; the rows are about 300') rows. If I want to put something in deep, like taters, I may make two passes. If your soil is really heavy clay or virgin sod you will probably have to do the same.

I've got a subsoiler, too. It is great to use every couple of years to improve drainage, but doesn't do much to prep the soil for planting anything.

I dont' know what you mean by "tripping the draft control." Do you have a 9/2N?

I just hook mine (Gearmore Brand) up so it's pretty much vertical, drop it and go. I'll shear the pin once in a while, but it's supposed to do that.

I keep the "shovel head" on. I could take it off, but it works as is.

I think the deepest I can get is about 16-18", which is governed by the lift bars dropping to the lowest level.

You may have to water the ditch, let it set and go again.

Good luck!

I have '49 8N. What I mean by tripping the draft control is when it hits an especially hard spot the hydraulics lift as they are supposed to then resume their former depth resulting in a un uniform depth in the ditch

Pitch..... ....sounds like your draft control is working as it is supposed to, constant load on engine by raising your middlebuster when the going gets tuff. Since you have a 8N with the little "flush" handle under your seat, you can change from horizontal draft control to the vertical position control which should give you a constant depth. You may need to make several passes to be satisfied..... ..... Dell
