I JUST PURCHASED A 9N FORD TRACTOR. THE SERIAL NUMBER IS *9N.TO.5582)*S WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF.TO. THE BACKWARDS LETTER C AND THE S? THE T IS DEFINITELY A T AND NOT AN I. ALSO, ABOVE THE GRILL THE NAME FERGUSON IS ON THE HOOD. COULD THIS BE A 1939 FORD FERGUSON? THANK YOU, RALPH

Hi Ralph. I'm going to take a stab at the serial number on your tractor. First the decals indicate that your tractor was a joint venture between Harry Ferguson and Henry Ford. Harry designed the hydraulic system and 3 pt. hitch while Henry designed and built the tractor. The Stars indicate that the engine was built with .040 Steel Cylinder sleeves. The serial number you provided *9N.TO.5582)*S, I think is probably *9N105582, which indicates it is a 2N built in 1943. 9N & 2N tractor serial numbers all start with 9N-----. I don't have the foggiest idea what the )S stands for. I understand that at one time they could be ordered from the factory with the Sherman Auxillary transmission installed. If this is the case and you have a Sherman Auxillary Tranny, then the )S, may stand for the Sherman. Just a guess on my part. I'm sure others will have more info. on this. Just a little extra info. 1939 tractors were from 9N1 to 9N10275; 1940 tractors from 9N10276 to 9N46017; 1941's from 9N46018 to 9N88933, 1942's from 9N88934-9N99046 and from mid year 1942, during the war changes were made in the tractors from 9N99047 to 9N105411; 1943 tractors were from 9N105412 to 9N126574. This same info. is available in the archives in the left colume. Welcome to the "N" world and safe tractoring. Ron

Ralph, I don't know about the serial #, but the early Fords (9N & 2N) had the Ferguson badge under the Ford badge on the hood. This indicated the use of the hydraulic system that was developed by Harry Ferguson. So, it sounds like you do indeed have a 9N or 2N. Need to decipher the serial # to determine.

Welcome to the N-crowd....John A
