Steering Box oil

This may be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway. I have a 52 8N. The fill hole for the steering box is on the steering column just under the steering wheel. My question is "How do yoU know when the fluid level is full"? It would seem silly to fill the fluid until it ran out of this fill hole.

Thanks!

Dell's right on it with this advice. Tose nipples from the squeze bottles do fit perfect. And if you can't quite get it around to fit.. a short 1' long piece of vinal or rubber tuping should easilly fit over the oil bottle nipple, and then be shoved in the hole... fill till it starts to run out.

I guess you could put a squirt of oil in that top screw hole on the steering column.. as there is a bearing up there near the wheel.

While you are doing this lubing, remember that your genny has an oil cap and your side mount distribuitor ( if ya got the sidemount ).. should if your engine is from a 52, etc.. it will have an oil cap too.

I use one of those small pump or squeeze 'precision' oil cans. A drop or two will do.

FYI..... ....I ran across a copy of this Ford N-Tractor Service Letter.

SERVICE LETTER LETTER No. 1-T-5
PAGE No. 1
DATE April 20, 1951 STEERING OIL FILLER PLUG 8N TRACTOR The oil filler plug on the new steering assembly (8N--3503-B) has been discontinued in production. The hole is filled with metal, completely sealing it. Consequently, it is necessary to use the cap screw on the right hand side, which secures the instrument panel support to the steering housing, when putting lubricant into the steering assembly. The housing should always be filled to the level of the cap screw-hole to insure that the top bearing (8N-3571), receives lubrication. It is recommended that multipurpose S.A.E. 90 gear lubricant be used to fill the steering assembly when the level falls below the cap screw.

On my 52 8N, open battery gas fill door, look down, close to oil pressure gauge, behind the proofmeter cable, you should see the referenced cap screw (I always called it a bolt), remove to check and fill steering box. You doubt? check bottom of hole with "J" shaped wire probe. I use 140wt outboard gear oil which comes in a pointed squeeze tube that I can insert in the hole..... ..... .Dell

If you can, reach in with your pinky finger and keep checking the oil level until you feel the oil. That way no over filling will happen:)
