Thanks for all help received, especially Dell, The 8N runs like a glass wheelbarrow. My next job is to replace the axle seals. I was given a new set when I bought the tractor as leaking has caused poor braking. My question is which manual would you all recommend for carrying out these types of repair?
Many thanks
Norman

Norman, Visit 8nford.com(Smith's 8N page) and click on FAQ's,the manual will make alot more sense after see Smith's pix/explaination.FO-4 seems to be writen for someone that already knows alot in my opinion. It's definitly not "8N repair for dummys"

Get an I&T FO-4 shop manual. They are great for maintenance and repair items. I've seen them at TSC stores, the NH dealerships, and you can also order them from places like this subs parts area, and many others. Goes around 24-29 bucks depending on where you get it. I was able to rebuild the steering box on my '52 8N using the FO-4, and lots of verbal advice from here.

Another handy one is te Master Parts Catalog.. has exploded diagrams and such. I've only seen it for order.. I don't think you can pick it up locally. Usually goes for 15-20 bucks.. etc.

As you report, there were some copies of the fo-4 with parts cat/diagrams in it. I've seen 3 different styles of the fo-4. My copy was printed in july 2002, and is probably only 30-40 pages lon in total!. There is another copy out now that is even thinner than my copy.. go figure... cover looks nicer though!
I went ahead and bought the MPC, and owners manuals, for my 8n, and owners/shop for my NAA.. and an owners manual for a 9/2N.. of which i don't currently own. ( but now since I got the book.. who knows.. might be just the excuse I need... " But Dear... I've already got the book.. why not get the tractor too!" ).. all those extra manuals, etc. were only 85 bucks plus shipping from online.. etc.. not too bad.

My copy has 150 pages counting the parts list, thats strang. Is the print in yours real small? Let me know if that manual trick works,I've got an old corvette manual that needs a car to go with it.

""Let me know if that manual trick works,I've got an old corvette manual that needs a car to go with it. ""

In theory it should work. Though I havn't tried it with a tractor yet.. I have used it successfully on old firearms. I collect antique firearms as a hobby... older stuff.. at least 50 plus years old.. back to the 1850's or so... mainly military bolt action rifles. Needless to say when I hit the gun shows I scrounge around in the loose 'assorted' ammo boxes trying to find the 'no longer made' collectable ammo for these guns. Quite a few times I have run up on some rare ammo at a great price for a gun I didn't currently own.. and picked it up. ( My procedure for collecting involves usually only getting the gun if I can also find a sample of ammo to go with it... just a personal thing... so needless to say.. I pass on some guns that I just can't find ammo for )... Anyway.. after having the ammo.. If I see one of those guns at a gun show, I usually just exclaim in front of the wife " Oh now I have a use for all that X dollars of ammo I had been saving... I need the gun to go with it .. etc.. etc... ) So far it has worked.... I don't know how long I can keep 'rolling the 7's and 11's on the dice though! )

Good luck on the car!
