The starter on my 9N locked up.

I could get it out, I ended up breaking the starter to get it out.

The bendix was all of the way out.

This is the 2nd time this has happen to me.

Do I need to replace the ring gear?

Thanks Ron

When you say that you broke it.. what did you break? armature shaft?

Some of these N's hav ethe starter opening 'opened up' at the 2'oclock position to facilitate easier removing. I found I had to loosen the oil can bolts so the can would move about a half an inch, and I also had to remove the drain petcock on the block, as well as the band clamp over the brushes on the starter... but it did clear it even fully extended.

Let us know what you find.

good luck

I wouldn't imagine that the ring gear would have anything to do with the starter locking up, unless it is so horribly worn that it causes the pinion on the starter to jam up and consequently destroy itself. Of course, if it was that badly worn, I imagine that you could see for yourself, as that would be the place where the starter would be locking.

I would say: look at the starter bendix and try to do like the NASA folks and work backwards by looking at how the starter got boogered up in the first place. Are teeth missing on the starter pinion gear? I assume the spring has flown off...did the bendix break off? Did the gear somehow come free of the starter drive? Try and do some detective work and you may find your answer. But I would still examine the ring gear and check for excessive wear.
