Just purchased a 52 8N.Good paint and tires. Had an oil leak from the pan so I drove 30 miles for a gasket. Before I even got started the water pump started leaking lukily only 8 miles for that. I removed the hood and saw antifreese around the #2 spark plug. So now 30 more miles for a head gasket. I removed the head and gasket and noticed between the #3 & #4cyl. on the outside bolt hole there was a heli coil installed and the block has a notch pushed out (not missing) on the thin part between the outside and the bolt hole. Since this was not leaking I left it alone.put the head back on and the bolt hole in front of that was striped. Back to the store for hard to find 7/16 heli coil kit. Ended up puting 4 in the block. One was between 2&3 cyl. that had already been repaired once(not good) now this will not tighten. But since this was in the center I figured no biggie. Finished my assembly replaced rad cap and installed new thermostat. Started right up(yeah). But now with new cap it literally squirts antifreese out the side of the block where someone made the first repair onto the exhaust. Don't know what to do about the bolt hole or the block. Is it a goner??? Good paint isn't always good !!!

Good paint isn't always good is right. Paint and makeup will hide a mutitude of flaws. Like Rob said a good machine shop can probably weld up the cracked places and repair the buggered up bolt holes. Hopefully for not much bucks if you take the engine in. You may be smart to take the head in as well and have them true it up while you're at it. Good paint helped me overlook an epoxied block on my Jubilee. So far it's holding up good but you have company out here. Good Luck, Lee

I think I'd rather buy a rusty tractor then a fresh paint job.

You take it to the right machine shop I bet they fix the headbolts for a lot less then the $500 a new block costs. Probably don't need to remove the crank and pistons.
If you have the right machine shop around there you can fix it and slap the head back on. Call around. You need to be discussing this with a machine shop to see what they can do for you.

Speaking of new blocks, I was surprised to see in a catlogue that brand new ones are available. Since I doubt they would be leftovers from original production over 50 years ago, where are they made now?

I really don't know but there are places overseas that if you send em a part they will make as many as you want, so long as the original purchase is large enough to make it worth while to set up. I used to deal with the Japanese like that, they would make one or 10,000 of anything you send em. But one would cost you as much as 500. You would do ok if you wanted thousands, just give em a few months.
How much are they selling for?
