Plenty of fuel gets to carborator. Plugs are always dry even after attempting to flood/start. If it does start if won't stay running. Coil spark ok. Checked points. Plug spark weak. What to try next?

I just went through this on my 8N. Put new battery cables on the thing and that is why the spark is weak. The voltage drop is enough so that when you go to start the machine turns over but the coil hasn't got enough kick to fire the engine . I put two new cables on for safety but realy the positive one was the one giving the trouble..

Tony..... ...when ya try to flood yer engine and can't, thats a sign of poor compression.

Time to do the "dreaded compression test". Ford specs: 90 psi min (dry). Pull all your sparkies so engine turns eazy. Crank for at least 5 puffs and ritter down. Then squirt about 1 oz or teaspoon full of oil innna sparkie hole and cranker 'gain. If compression increases, you've got worn engine rings. If compression doesn't increase, you've gott sticky intake valves or burned exhaust valves.

Sticky intake valves can be unstuck with solvent of your choice. I use Marvel Mystery Oil.

How do you get ....."good Coil spark ...and... Plug spark weak"????..... this is an interesting trick. And BTW, its the plug sparkies that counts in making your engine start and run.

And since you neglected to share with us, any other important data, like is your tractor OEM 6 volts or a 12 volt conversion. Is your 8N an early square frontmount ignition coil? or is your 8N a late model roundcan ignition coil distributor? This secret information can help us help you diagnose your problems..... ....Dell, who flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife

Tony..... ...BTW = By The Way ..... ..computer shorthand..... .LOL = laughing out loud..... .IMHO == In My Humble Opinion..... FYI = For Your Information..... there's a lotta 'em

You do know that you can eazily disconnect (look closely, ends are spring loaded) your governor rod from your carb and manually goose your carb. If'n it don't goose by hand, then its probably your distributor centrifical advance weights/springs under your distributor points plate. If'n it gooses by hand ok, then its a governor issue and probably needs to be rebuilt..... ....Dell
