Bought a used Woods with 3-blades, belt drive from a large pto-driven pulley. I'm hoping this will prove to be reliable for light duty on the lot around my tin shed. It's a Rear Discharge (I think model RD490) about 60 inches wide. Anybody got one? Like it? Hate it? How old would it be? I don't see this model on the Woods web site. It looked pretty good, no welds, good belts, worn but useable blade. Paid $450. Mi

I too have an RM-59 Woods mower. Good machine, no gearbox to wearout. Sound like a plus? It is till you have to pay about $70 for the belt. I got mine used in 94 and have put two belts on it, one wore out and the other was op error. Went across a ditch and blades bottomed out on other side, broke the belt and the bank again. I tore the hub out of a rear wheel from running on highway and it a flopping back and forth. Called dealer and $43 for new one. You need to raise it up and hang it on stay chains for highway running. New blades were $45 for three about 4 years ago. Seems to pull harder than a bush hog, so keep the blades sharp, and if it gets to vibrating very much, balance the blades on a nail. I wouldn't take double that for mine. It's over twelve inches long and a keeper. L8R----Fred OH

Woods makes good mowers. I have an older RM59 which is configured just about like what you describe. Big flywheel that is driven by the tractor PTO. The flywheel then runs this super long belt through some twists and turns to run three blades. Mine is side discharge. One thing to remember, the bolts that hold on the blades are left handed thread and if they are like mine, take a 3' cheater bar to break loose. Mine mows just as good as my Toro rider. I use limit chains on the front of mine cause it only has two rear wheels. Later models have fronts wheels too. Enjoy.
