The wiring was a mess so I bought a new wire harness for a 51 8N. Tractor is 6V, positive ground, with a regulator behind the dash. The manual shows that the field and ground terminals are on the side of the generator, ground should be closer to the back. The problem is that the generator terminals look very close together and I can't really tell which is which. Generator is original and corroded, no markings. One terminal is almost in line with the other, but one is slightly closer to the block. Can anyone tell me which is field and which is ground?

Clean the terminals and you will see that one terminal is insulated from the generator case by a plastic washer. This is the field terminal. The other is connected to the case and this is the ground terminal.
