I know that I read on this forum not to use gasket sealers on any of the hydraulic system gaskets - so I didn't. Unfortunately for me, I have oil seaping all the way around my hydraulic pump gasket. Before reinstalling the pump, I made sure that both the pump and center housing surfaces were perfectly clean. I tightened the bolts gradually using a criss-cross pattern. I know my pump is not aluminum because a magnet sticks to it. What did I do wrong? I guess I have to use gasket sealer. What type should I use? Thanks in advance.

Rick-

Before you do anything, try to ascertain the current torque of those bolts. Try retorquind the bolts and if you notice bolt movement then your bolts are worn or the female threads are - or both. I suspect this is the cause of the leaks OR the mating surfaces are not flat.

You should not need a gasket sealer in this application. Your standard Permatex/petroeum based and silicone based gasket sealers are NOT MEANT for high pressure applications.

make sure your bolts are proper length so that they aren't "bottoming out" giving you the false impression that they are drawing down two pieces for a tight fit.
